Beyond Borders: Diaspora Health Care Forum Participants Dr. Kumanan Wilson, BSc, MD, MSc, FRCP (C) As a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) New Investigator, Dr. Wilson's research has focused on studying policy making in areas of health protection. He has conducted research into the impact of intergovernmental relations on health policy. He authored a chapter in Federalism, Democracy, and Health Policy in Canada on the role of federalism in health surveillance. He has also published articles in Canadian medical journals describing the impact of intergovernmental relations on the delivery of health care. His continuing work for the Institute will focus on studying the impact of intergovernmental relations on the development of public health policy. He is a specialist in General Internal Medicine at the Toronto General Hospital, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, and is a member of TSVP's Advisory Board. Dr. Shiamala Suntharalingam, BSc, MB BS, DFFP, DRCOG, MRCGP Dr. Suntharalingam graduated from St George's Hospital Medical School London in 1997 and is trained as a General Practitioner. Her interests are in child and maternal health, and family planning. She spent six months in the Vanni region in 2003 working with the Centre for Health Care, a local NGO, assessing health projects. During this time, she also worked with the Association of Medical Doctors of Asia, a Japanese NGO, on a mobile health clinic. In the United Kingdom, she is the Youth Forum Secretary of the Medical Institute of Tamils and works with the Tamils Health Organisation (UK) as well. Dr. Vadivelu Santhakumar, MB BS, CCFP Dr. Santhakumar graduated from Jaffna University's Faculty of Medicine (First Class Honours) in 1983. Since coming to Canada, he has been practicing family medicine in Mississauga and Don Mills, Ontario. He is a founding member of the Medical Institute for Tamils, an association of Tamil-speaking medical and dental professionals in North America, and is presently its treasurer. In 2003, he led a team of Canadian doctors on a medical mission to the Jaffna and Vanni districts of northern Sri Lanka. Dr. Meera Selvakone, BSc, MD, CCFP Dr. Selvakone graduated from the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Medicine in 2001. She underwent residency training at St. Michael's Hospital of the University of Toronto from 2001 to 2003. She is currently practicing family medicine. She is also the Youth Coordinator of the Medical Institute for Tamils, an association of Tamil-speaking medical and dental professionals in North America. Chris Sulway, BSc (Kin), BSc (PT), MHSc, CAFCI Mr. Sulway is the co-chair of the International Centre for Disability and Rehabilitation at the University of Toronto. This Centre focuses on research, education and service, addressing global disability issues. He is a Physical Therapist who has specialized in the delivery of rehabilitation to HIV+ patients. He currently works at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto and teaches at the University of Toronto Rehabilitation Sciences Sector. Jeya Nadarajah, BSc, MD (candidate) Since finishing her undergraduate studies at McMaster University, Ms. Nadarajah is in her second year of reading medicine at the institution's Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and is an advisor to McMaster University Medical Journal. She is also a researcher in microbiology at Sunnybrook and Women's Health Sciences Centre. Ms. Nadarajah has served in the Canadian army reserves for the past eight years and was involved in peace-keeping duties overseas. She is a crisis-intervention counsellor for Toronto Police Victim Services and is also a health project coordinator with TSVP. Dr. Senthil Kumar, BSc, MPH, MD Dr. Kumar recently graduated from Duke University School of Medicine and will be pursuing residency training in Diagnostic Radiology. He is interested in public health. He recently spent a month in northern Sri Lanka on a medical student elective rotation. He is also the Youth Group Coordinator of the Tamils Health Organizatio |
